Tech-led Innovations, Customisation Define New Kitchens

Leading manufacturers introduce highly innovative solutions in response to the evolving uses of the kitchen

If you ever wanted to narrow the distance between farm and table or between kitchen and dining/living room, new kitchen systems launched at EuroCucina and Milan Design Week this year should come as exciting solutions for you.

With the evolving use of kitchens, manufacturers are coming up with solutions that solve even anticipated issues. Among the most interesting that we found come from Arclinea, Aster Cucine, Cesar Kitchens and SieMatic. Cesar focuses on demarcating the kitchen space and an adjoining area of the home while simultaneously connecting them with beautifully designed furniture. Arclinea, on the other hand, has come up with a cabinet for hydroponic gardening to ensures a supply of fresh greens.

Meanwhile, SieMatic offers elements - and even bigger units - that disappear behind enclosures for a tidy work area. Conversely, display cabinets also appear with no more than a flick of the wrist. Aster Cucine has solutions that blend seamlessly the kitchen area with an adjoining.

What is common among all is that the new systems fit right into existing ones as long as they are from the same range or model. The expanse of the new work surfaces is very generous, while the possibility for customisation and incorporation of varied elements redefine modularity.

Arclinea

At the EuroCucina sector of Salone del Mobile ‘24, Arclinea launched Proxima, its latest high-performing, professional kitchen system designed by Antonio Citterio, the brand’s long-standing collaborator. Proxima is very much in line with the brand’s ethos of bringing ‘professional-grade kitchens’ into private homes, says Federico Fortuna, fourth-generation member of the family that owns Arclinea and currently the brand’s Area Manager.

“Of all the rooms in the home, the kitchen is the most complex and fascinating, the place where cuisine and conviviality, the ancestral elements of fire and water, high-performance materials and cutting-edge technologies all merge into one,” explains Citterio. “The Arclinea response to this complexity has always been to marry technical and practical precision, the innovation of shape with that of space.”

Proxima embodies the idea with a large stainless-steel kitchen island that allows a variety of compositional possibilities, integrates all the functional tools of a professional kitchen, and facilitates working on both sides. “Its interiors are thoughtfully designed for optimal positioning of tools and tableware to facilitate easy access and use,” notes Fortuna.

Proxima comes with new elements, including the Hortus, a cabinet designed for growing small vegetables, bringing the farm-to-table concept even closer together. Hortus employs hydroponic technique controlled by a software making a productive garden possible with a minimum effort.

Another element is the Inverso, a cabinet column engineered to allow the interior of the to be completely rotated outwards “with an exceptional aesthetic and functional result”. The result is a storage that can be customised such that some elements can be hidden away while others can be put on display.

"In Proxima, everything is extremely performing and evocative of the pleasure of cooking for others and with others," Citterio says.

Aster Cucine

The Brera series from Aster Cucine offers geometric solid lines tempered with differing cabinetry volumes. The series is highlighted by the three-dimensional aesthetic of the door fronts, making the surfaces evocative and sophisticated. Brera's hues project warmth, thanks to how the collection tends towards earthy tones walnut, brown, beige, and ecru. Various finishes and cabinet interior choices are available.

Unique to Brera's design is the cantilevered table supported by a sheet of tempered glass that elevate the design. The table also comes as a pull-out version. Another notable feature is the tall column storage unit with a chic foil handle running along the door's edges. The Brera range also accommodates dividing elements such as bookcases, cabinets and elements, allowing the homeowner to demarcate a dining area and kitchen space. Brera can even be extended into the living room's design narrative.

The designers at Aster Cucine believe that the kitchen's ambience can be extended into the living space through similar design elements such as handles of TV consoles, lacquered surfaces, cantilevered sideboards, and much more. While the kitchen is the heart of the home, the Brera range from Aster Cucine gives the owner the flexibility to inject the same chic geometric designs from the culinary space into living areas that promote conviviality and human connection.

The Brera range aesthetics play with shadows and reflections through curated materials and finishes. The designers use darker hues and masculine finishes to inspire a moodier kitchen ambience. Think powdery greys, ash, cedar, stone, or onyx paired with a white marble top that glows with backlit shelves underneath. Open caddy shelves hide under sleek countertops while razor-thin door handles peek out from the tops of doors. The Brera design narrative is about the little details that create the atmosphere to convene, cook and connect.

Cesar

At the Milan Design Week this year, Cesar showcased innovation in materials, surfaces, colours, and textures, alongside functionality and spatial fluidity.

Employing innovative technology, the Italian kitchen brand developed original finishes that were applied to Utopian Garden and Wonder Landscape in the N_Elle collection, and Nuance in the Tangram Island collection.

Oak was introduced to the existing Groove door. The range has three-dimensional vertical grooves that hide the joints between the modules and give an impression of a single unified surface. The same grooves also help camouflage the doors’ openings.

Cesar has also added a new corner solution to The 50’s wall unit system. Available in wall-mounted and double-sided versions, the corner structure is perfect for any space needs to be enclosed or subdivided with a simple furniture that is easy to transform and adapt over time.

“The essential characteristics of a Cesar include modularity, creative product development, meticulous materials selection and research, as well as stylistic unity and versatility,” says Dante Cester, a second-generation member of the family that owns the brand who is in charge of growing the business. “Cesar has the ability to blend elements into a harmonious and functional design that caters to the needs and lifestyles of customers, offering innovative and high-quality solutions.”

Cesar answers the needs of those seeking to create a fluid and versatile environment today. “In the past, for example, kitchens were separated from the living room by a wall,” Cester cites. “Today, people break through the wall to create open kitchen.”

Working with the design studio Garcia Cumini, Cesar developed Unit Pocket which separates rooms while keeping them in continuous visual contact. A similar concept is introduced to The 50’s bookcase system which is ideal for an open domestic environment, says Cester. This ‘architecture of objects’, and not just walls, lets the different spaces interact between themselves, creating a flexible and seamless lifestyle environment.”

Sustainability is an important consideration in the Cesar production process. “We prioritise environmentally friendly practices and materials that minimise our impact on the planet. For instance, our furniture carcasses are crafted using V100 particle panels, which have the highest level of water resistance for internal use. Furthermore, the panels we utilise have very low formaldehyde emissions, complying with Carb Phase II and TSCA Title VI standards.

Cesar is FSC-certified, a mark that guarantees the traceability of the wood it uses, and ensures it originates from responsibly managed forests. “We firmly believe that the condition of tomorrow’s world depends on the actions that we take today,” Cester concludes.

A place for everything makes for an orderly kitchen with the S2 generation A place for everything makes for an orderly kitchen with the S2 generation

SieMatic

German kitchen specialist SieMatic presented fresh perspectives for kitchens at Eurocucina 2024 where it unveiled the ‘S2 generation’. The collection features exciting innovations such as SieMatic SecretSpace and Secret Service.

The new SieMatic S2 generation offers a striking design where visible and invisible element units create a cohesive, functional product. A flick of the wrist opens up closed pieces of furniture and transforms them into decorative shelves; hobs are hidden below sliding countertops, and appliances are hidden in elegant cabinets. The genius design even hides entire kitchen segments behind sliding folding doors.

Display shelves appear and disappear allowing owners full control of their kitchen’s design Display shelves appear and disappear allowing owners full control of their kitchen’s design

The new SieMatic S2 takes the idea of aesthetic reduction to the bare essentials while still being purposeful. The unique rotating cabinet elements and flat drawers with S2 recess channels can be integrated inconspicuously. Several elements make this kitchen look sophisticated: matt aluminium titanium, oak hazel brown, ceramic storm gris, fishbone tarsie veneer, and contrasting velvet matt black for the recess channels, cabinets and plinths. With curated colours, these high-quality materials allow kitchen owners to create designs suited to their interior theme.

In addition, the elegant fronts of the tall wall cabinets can had in a unique ‘gold bronze aluminium’ hue. Many other colour possibilities are available – some 2,000 of them – via the SieMatic Individual Colour System. The polished, slender profiles pair chicly with the full-height glass cabinets’ mirrored back walls. The SieMatic SecretSpace tall cabinet can transform into a decorative open shelf element or a closed cabinet holding keepsakes. If one wants to take the kitchen design further to conceal a wet kitchen, utility room and pantry, one can opt for a flushed door that covertly blends and hides these spaces.
