The Serra House in Kuala Lumpur is conceived as a quiet retreat within the bustling city—grounded in nature yet fluid in experience. Designed by TKCA Architects, the home draws from the contours of mountain ranges, translating earthy tones and gentle, undulating curves into a spatial language that feels both sculptural and calm. The result is an environment that is composed and grounded, yet open and inviting.
At its core, an S-shaped ceiling flows through the length of the residence, both dividing and connecting two distinct zones. The Dune, which comprises the living and master areas, is defined by softer gestures that support rest and retreat. In contrast, the Hearth, which houses the dining, kitchen, and study areas, is shaped around warmth and daily interaction. This continuous ceiling form guides movement, frames sightlines, and links spaces without the need for partitions.
Sliding panels allow the family to modulate light and privacy throughout the day, introducing a sense of adaptability. This choreography of movement turns the static envelope into something living and responsive, giving each space a rhythm that adapts to mood and activity.
Circular elements recur across the home as handles, ventilation points, cable passages, cup slots, and other integrated details. Echoing the ceiling’s curvature, these forms establish visual continuity while adding a tactile dimension. More than functional, they punctuate surfaces with lightness, guiding air, light, and connection across the home.
A palette of warm neutrals such as sand-toned walls, timber flooring, and soft travertine surfaces anchors the interiors. Combined with natural light and restrained material contrasts, the spaces move between intimacy and openness with ease, creating a calm, liveable environment.
Pairing with the warm tones throughout Serra House, the LS 990 in ivory and lacquered champagne were chosen for the home’s electrical installation. These colours harmonise with the surrounding materials and ambient lighting, flowing together with the other elements to create a cohesive space.
