Lamitak: A top-down approach to doing good

How Lamitak’s commitment to sustainability delivers benefits to the company, its customers, and the greater community

Product superiority helped establish TAK Products & Services’ leadership in lifestyle surface. What is of little renown is that the company, through its high pressure laminate surface brand Lamitak, has been implementing internal practices for which they have accumulated international sustainability certifications.

After the pandemic, people have become more health conscious and keen on sustainability, observes Jansen Tan, Director of Product & Brand at Lamitak. “Consequently, there is now a surge in demand for ‘greener’ products, particularly in building materials for living spaces,” he affirms.

“When it comes to material selection, the certifications that we have garnered serve as a credible reference, assuring designers and homeowners that our products undergo rigorous testing to ensure safety and reliability.”

Lamitak is only at the initial stage of establishing an internal framework for its sustainability programme. It is forming a sustainability task force by appointing key personnel to the committee that will develop programmes and collaborate with associations to implement sustainability initiatives.

Despite this, it has already garnered several sustainability recognition, including Greenguard and Greenguard Gold certifications for indoor air quality, a leader rating of four ticks from the Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP), a certificate by Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), and a TÜV SÜD Certification for products, services, and processes that conform with international standards for safety, quality and sustainability. Moreover, its low emission and low toxicity ratings have merited a Green Label Singapore certification.

Recently, an architect and passionate sustainable-design advocate has completed a multi-generational residential project using only sustainable materials. “In such critical projects, Lamitak’s strong certification provides the peace of mind for both the architect and the homeowners, reinforcing their decision to choose our materials.”

Each certification is renewed annually, Tan adds. “This requires that our products go through a fresh evaluation every year.”

Tan affirms that although they are in the midst of reviewing their logistics and supply-chain processes, they have been implementing initiatives aligned with sustainability objectives. “For example, we are using FSC-certified papers for our marketing tools. We have also created a ‘recycled-box’ at Lamitak Studio where customers can drop off their unwanted laminate samples for recycling.”

The company’s sustainability efforts are part of a larger goal  to bring greater good to the community. As a brand, it delivers  good design and quality products to customers by addressing the their needs while actively engaging with the design community. It contributes to design initiatives of professional designers and design students. It has also been actively been giving to education bursaries for low-income families. As a corporate front of the business, TAK has also been actively been giving to education bursaries for low-income families. As part of its sustainability agenda, TAK is installing solar panels in its headquarters.
