Future Impact 2, presented by DesignSingapore Council, is currently held at the historic La Rotonda del Pellegrini until 21 April. The works demonstrate the evolving and transformative power of design for a more sustainable future, while reflecting Singapore’s distinctive forward-thinking vision and approach to design. From furnture that absorbs carbon dioxide to heat-transferring ceramics, the seven designers experiment wih technology, materiality and production.
This year’s designs aim to integrate a different technology, push the boundaries of production to minimise environmental impact, reconsider current production methods, and enhance functionality. The works were curated by Tony Chambers and Maria Cristina Didero.
The designers featured in Future Impact 2 are: David Lee with Monolith chair and table; Gabriel Tan with Good Gourd – Hybrid Basketry Lamps; Christian+Jade with Para Stool; Faezah Shaharuddin with Unlikely Fragments; Genevieve Ang and Clement Zheng from Interactive Materials Lab with Reciproco; Tiffany Loy with Mosaic Membrane; and Zavier Wong with Manifold Steel - Wall Piece No.1
Challenging the trend of complex design, artist and designer David Lee’s Monolith chair and table is fashioned from a single piece of material that is laser-cut and bent into final form. The design marks an unusual return to conventional production and manufacturing methods, which in turn minimises waste, human labour and material consumption.
Complementing the showcase were free hands-on workshops inspired by the key themes of Future Impact 2, where visitors can have a hand at creating their own personalised mementos.
