Artistic Expressions For Residences

We continue our series by asking designers to dream up a unique interior concept using mainly items from Space Furniture. Danielle Ma, founder and creative director of Maer Atelier, leads a team that pushes the boundaries of design by balancing form and function. Maer Atelier prioritises open communication, collaboration, and tailored interior design solutions, ensuring that they bring a unique blend of creativity.

Please describe the design in your render

We envisioned designing a basement of a house by featuring a private lounge/club area. Raw materials and finishes are carefully selected to imbue the area with character. This space is complete with a clean ceiling design with a touch of dark tinted mirror at the edge to allow the raw stone wall to visually extend further.

The glass roof and skylight are incorporated to introduce natural light into the basement space. And the water feature creates a sense of connection to the outdoors, alleviating any feelings of confinement. The higher ceiling above the seating area further enhances the sense of spaciousness.

For the kitchen area, the step-up design creates a subtle division while maintaining an open and flowing layout. The dramatic Bocci Random 44.8 pendant lights above the island serve as a focal point, drawing attention to this area.

We introduced pieces like the Edra Cabana Cabinet and the Moooi Carpets Sketched Collage Rug to inject some personality and playfulness into the space. These pieces add visual interest, creating a more dynamic atmosphere in the lounge area. This blend of sophisticated design and whimsical elements adds depth and character to the overall aesthetic.

Tell us more about the uniqueness of your design style

Our design style has always been centred around creating unique space experiences and enhancing lifestyle for private estates. We prioritise creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also enhance the way people interact within them. For residential projects, we design spaces that resonate with our clients’ individual tastes and personalities, allowing them to feel a strong sense of connection with their environment. As our journey in the design industry progresses, we’ve had the opportunity to expand our horizons and accumulate user experiences as a consumer in art and design related sectors. This exposure has enriched our perspective as designers, enabling us to bring a multidimensional approach to the spaces we work on.

What kind of meaningful interior design projects would you be keen to work on moving forward?

Sustainable design is one direction I am dedicated to exploring further – reusing, retaining, and transforming trash into treasure through recycling and green design. In today’s market, many materials and installation methods are treated, and with chemicals. My goal is to design spaces that prioritise the well-being of consumers by ensuring they are in a safe and healthy environment.

Could you elaborate how you take inspiration from art for your designs?

Art is an expression of thoughts, emotions, intuition, imagination and creativity, and design is a functional art commission to its user. Art plays a significant role in inspiring our design process, stimulating our visual and emotional senses. We admire artists who convey messages through their work, and we draw inspiration from their use of colour, texture, composition and the history or inspiration behind the artwork. I enjoy art pieces that are visually appealing, convey messages in a relatively implicit manner, leaving room for imagination.

As designers, we approach our work with a blend of creativity and pragmatism. We adhere to fundamental principles of design such as proportion, scale, and materiality, ensuring that the foundation of our designs is solid. Once these fundamental rules are established, we have the freedom to infuse our designs with artistic creativity.

How does Space Furniture support your design/architectural endeavours?

Space Furniture is a very reliable platform that allows us to conveniently use furniture from well-known brands that can be difficult and risky to reach out ourself. With the assistance of knowledgeable professionals from Space, designers can arrange furniture dimensions more reasonably, record material selections, allowing us to make decisions more accurately and quickly.

What are some of the furniture brands from Space that have caught your eye recently or inspired you?

Two of my favourite brands are Edra and Poliform, as they have contrasting styles. Edra is known for its avant-garde and boundary pushing designs that often challenge conventional notions of furniture. Their pieces often feature bold shapes, unique forms, and unexpected materials, making them standout statement pieces in any space. Poliform is known for its sleek and modern designs that embody elegance, sophistication, and minimalism. Their furniture pieces often feature clean lines, simple shapes, and neutral colours, making them versatile and timeless.
